Androgenetic (male and female) baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. It can also be a serious problem for women. Three components are key to both male and female balding.
1. There is a genetic predisposition to balding.
2. The excessive presence of male hormones.
3. Aging – Enough time to allow the first two factors to occur.
Both men and women make male hormones, which have a role in both sexes. However, male pattern baldness is more common in men than in females due to higher levels of androgens in men.
DHT is the root cause for hair loss
It is metabolism of male hormones (androgen/testosterone) which is main cause of hair loss and male and female pattern balding both in men and women.
The metabolism of androgen involves an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase which combines with the hormone (testosterone) and converts it to DHT (Dihydro-testosterone). DHT is a natural metabolite in our bodies.
Male and female pattern balding are both caused by the same thing
Both men and women are predisposed to produce higher levels of DHT than normal. This accumulation of DHT and its effects on the cells within the hair follicles and roots is what causes male and female patternbalding.
DHT can get into hair follicles and roots, particularly in a region known as the dermal papilla. It alters cell activity and stops necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from being provided nourishment. DHT causes hair follicles to reproduce at a slower rate. This reduces the length of their growth phase (anagen phase), and/or extends their resting phase (telogen phase). DHT can also cause hair follicles to shrink and become progressively smaller and more fine. Miniaturization is a process that causes hair to fall. 95% of hair loss is caused by DHT-induced androgeneticaloepcia.
The molecular level blockade of DHT synthesis is the basis of treatment for MPHL (male-pattern hair loss) or FPHL (female-pattern hair loss). Many natural DHT inhibitors are available, as well as a variety of drugs that can be used to restore hair health.
